Nasa, Google aim for virtual space travel

Web surfers may soon be able to explore the canyons of Mars and experience a virtual flight over the surface of the moon thanks to a deal announced on Monday between web search company Google and the Nasa Ames Research Centre. Nasa and Google said they will work together on a range of technical problems and will make Nasa’s space exploration work more accessible to the public.

Landis, Gatlin lead the way in year of doping

Justin Gatlin and Floyd Landis made headlines for their sporting achievements in 2006. They were bigger news when they were caught in the year’s biggest doping scandals. Gatlin, who equalled the world record in the 100m, and Landis, who won the Tour de France, had positive tests for testosterone revealed within 48 hours of each other at the end of July.

Pharmacists go to court over medicine pricing

Pharmacists filed an urgent application in the Pretoria High Court on Monday challenging the new medicine-price regulations, said three pharmacist organisations. The pharmacists are challenging both the recommendation on medicine-dispensing fees made by the medicine-pricing committee to the minister of health and the regulations in terms of which it was made.

Fabio Cannavaro received recognition for his outstanding performance in leading Italy to World Cup glory on Monday when he was handed the Fifa World Player of the Year award to add to his European Footballer of the Year honour. The imperious Italy captain was a rock at the heart of a defence that leaked just two goals in seven matches.

‘Perthetic’ England lambasted in press

A ”Perthetic” performance by England in the third Test of the Ashes, thereby conceding the historic urn to Australia, was blasted in the British press on Tuesday, most of which called for the resignation of coach Duncan Fletcher. England, set a near-impossible 557 to win, seemed as if they might make a battle of it on the final day before yet another collapse at the crease.

UN appeals for $1,8bn in Sudan aid

Sudan’s humanitarian and development needs will reach a whopping $1,8-billion in 2007, by far the largest share of the global funds demanded by United Nations chief Kofi Annan, the UN said Tuesday. "Sudan will require more than $1,8-billion to fund humanitarian, recovery and development projects in 2007," said a UN press release.

Shuttle to undock from space station

Nasa planned to undock the space shuttle Discovery from the International Space Station on Tuesday after an eventful mission that included a crucial rewiring and the retraction of a stubborn solar array. The undocking will be the first step in the shuttle Discovery‘s journey home, which is slated for Friday, a day later than originally planned.
