North Korea demands new atomic plant

North Korea said on Monday it wanted all sanctions lifted before it would discuss implementing a nuclear disarmament deal. North Korea made the demand at the opening day of six-party talks in Beijing aimed at dismantling North Korea’s nuclear weapons, according to a source close to the talks.

It says a lot about an organisation that you invite somebody on the occasion of your 21st anniversary to point to your weaknesses and debate whether you are on track for another 21 years. Chelsea keep pressure on United

Manchester United’s lead in the Premier League was cut to two points on Sunday after they lost to West Ham 1-0 and Chelsea came back to beat Everton 3-2. Nigel Reo-Coker scored the winning goal in the 75th minute at Upton Park, giving Alan Curbishley a winning start as West Ham manager.

Chiefs hammer Maritzburg United

Kaizer Chiefs were merciless in hammering Maritzburg United 6-1 in a Premier Soccer League match played at Loftus Stadium on Sunday. Chiefs led 2-1 at half-time. In-form Kaizer Motaung Jnr stole the limelight with a hat-trick, but it was United striker Sandile Ndlovu who hushed the Amakhosi supporters when he opened the scoring.

Els claims elusive victory

Ernie Els won his fourth South African Airways Open title at Humewood Golf Club on Sunday and described it as the biggest win at this stage of his career. Els overturned a three-shot deficit on Trevor Immelman and closed with a 65 to win on 24 under par, three strokes ahead of Immelman, who signed for a 71.

Amajita win Cosafa Cup

A less than appreciative mood from the crowd at the Mafikeng Stadium regarding their team’s performance did not stop the South African under-20 team, better known as Amajita, from winning the Metropolitan Cosafa Cup with a 2-1 win over Zambia on Sunday.

Publisher behind OJ Simpson saga gets the sack

Judith Regan, the enfant terrible of American publishing who caused outrage by touting a quasi-confessional by OJ Simpson entitled If I Did It, has been sacked by her boss, Rupert Murdoch, during his company’s Christmas party. The statement was distributed on Friday evening as 4 000 revellers were descending on the Christmas party of Murdoch’s News Corp.
