Two South African families who immigrated to New Zealand lost three of their children in a freak landslide as they played in a river at a popular picnic spot, it was reported on Sunday. The parents watched helplessly on Friday evening as the children were hit by tonnes of rock in the Pohangina River, near Palmerston North.

Nigeria’s ruling People’s Democratic Party on Sunday chose Umaru Yar’Adua, Governor of the northern Katsina state, as its candidate for the April 2007 presidential election. Yar’Adua (55) won hands down, garnering 3 024 votes out of a total of 4 007 valid votes cast.

Trevor Immelman carded a course-record nine-under-par 63 on his way to a three-stroke lead ahead of the final round of the South African Airways (SAA) Open at Humewood Golf Club on Saturday. Immelman’s spectacular bogey-free round included nine birdies and placed him at 20-under-par, three shots ahead of Ernie Els.

Geoff Ogilvy moved into contention with a fast start on Saturday in the Target World Challenge. He wound up alone in the lead thanks to a sloppy finish by tournament host Tiger Woods. The United States uses its aid budget to bribe those countries that have a vote in the United Nations Security Council, giving them 59% more cash in years when they have a seat, according to research by economists. ”Aid should go to the people who need it, not as a political sweetener,” said Duncan Green, of Oxfam.
