Windies plan major security for World Cup

The organisers of next year’s Cricket World Cup are taking every possible step to ensure security during the event in the Caribbean, a top official said on Tuesday. Foreign experts have been called in to advise on the security plans for the championship, which begins in March, chairperson of the World Cup 2007 organising board Ken Gordon told the media.

Boje says goodbye to international cricket

Nicky Boje, South Africa’s leading Test spin bowler, announced his retirement on Tuesday in a move that came on the day he was due to join the squad for the first Test against India starting at the Wanderers Stadium on Friday. His sudden retirement came as a shock to selection convenor Haroon Lorgat and coach Mickey Arthur.

Zuma document request postponed

The request by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to have documents pertaining to meetings between Jacob Zuma, French arms manufacturer Thint and Schabir Shaik released from Mauritius was on Tuesday postponed to March. Zuma and Thint’s legal teams will oppose the application for the documents to be handed over to the NPA.

Higher rates to stabilise rand, economists say

Interest-rate hikes locally are likely to make for a more stable rand going into the next year, analysts say. The carry trade, which involves borrowing in low yielding currencies and investing in high yielders, is expected to help the rand offset the negative effect that the imports need for South Africa’s increased infrastructural spending will have.

JSE down on futures-related trade

The JSE was weaker in noon trade on Tuesday, dragged down by derivatives-related activity ahead of next Thursday’s futures close-out. A stronger rand and soft commodity prices also contributed to the bourse’s soggy feel. By 11.59am, the all-share and all-share industrial indices shed 0,38% and 0,2% respectively.
