France armed and trained radical militia blamed for most of the killings in Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, two Rwandan ex-soldiers told a panel probing alleged French complicity in the massacres on Monday. The pair said French troops had worked closely with the former Rwandan army and members of the Interahamwe militia.

Iran opened a conference on Monday to examine the Holocaust and question whether Nazi Germany used gas chambers to kill Jews, drawing condemnation in the West and criticism from Iran’s Jewish community. Jewish rabbis were present at the government-sponsored event, Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision, alongside academics from Europe.

Opener Imran Farhat hit an aggressive half-century and paceman Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took 3-37 to help Pakistan beat the West Indies by seven wickets in the third one-day match on Sunday. The dashing left-hander hit five boundaries and two sixes in his 72-ball 58 to help Pakistan achieve a revised target of 191 with eight deliveries to spare and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

A visit by top ranking South Afr5ican National Defence Force officers to Sudan as part of a goodwill visit to South African troops deployed beyond the country’s borders had to be cancelled when the group was refused entry into Sudan. The group was told on Monday they will only get to visit troops deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.

A United Nations mission to be led by South Africa’s Desmond Tutu to probe last month’s deaths of 19 civilians in Gaza under Israeli shelling has been called off because Israel did not authorise the trip, a spokesperson said on Monday. The Nobel Peace laureate had other engagements and could not wait any longer for Israeli permission, she added.

Burkina Faso launched an effort on Sunday to offer identity cards to hundreds of women chased from their village for alleged witchcraft and often forced to live on society’s periphery in abject poverty. ”We are here to tell them, you are citizens,” Burkinabe Human Rights Minister Monique Ilboudo told the country’s TNB public television station.
