The South African Police Service, the National Religious Leaders’ Forum (NRLF) and the Minister of Safety and Security, Charles Nqakula, met in Pretoria on Thursday to strengthen ties between the organisations in the fight against crime. A Christmas gift inspired by England goalkeeper Paul Robinson’s horror own goal against Croatia has helped to boost diplomatic ties between London and Zagreb, it was reported on Thursday. The British embassy in Zagreb has printed photographs of the infamous incident on the back of an official invitation for its Christmas party.

Hundreds of mineworkers at the Centurion Gold Mine in Primrose, Germiston, have downed tools in protest against their working conditions. The National Union of Mineworkers said on Thursday that about 600 workers had gone on strike since Wednesday.

Chadian rebels on Thursday entered the eastern town of Biltine in the latest move of their hit-and-run military campaign against President Idriss Déby, a rebel leader and government military sources said. They said a column of vehicles belonging to the rebels entered the town without encountering any serious resistance.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) was the big winner in the last round of by-elections to take place this year, claiming all but one of the 12 wards contested in results. The municipal by-elections on Wednesday were marked by low voter turnouts, with an 11% turnout at ward three in Mbolela (Nelspruit).
