A century by Irfan Pathan helped India to a respectable total of 316-7 at close of play on the first day of their four-day warm-up match against the Rest of South Africa at Sedgars Park in Potchefstroom on Thursday. Pathan was not out on 111 and Zaheer Khan had nine. India, sent in to bat first, were all at sea in the morning session as Morne Morkel mowed down the top order.

The South African government has promised to intensity the fight against diabetes, one of the world’s foremost experts on the disease, Professor George Alberti, said on Thursday. Alberti, a past president of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), is also chairperson of the organising committee of the IDF’s World Diabetes Congress, being held in Cape Town.

A Christmas gift inspired by England goalkeeper Paul Robinson’s horror own goal against Croatia has helped to boost diplomatic ties between London and Zagreb, it was reported on Thursday. The British embassy in Zagreb has printed photographs of the infamous incident on the back of an official invitation for its Christmas party.

Hundreds of mineworkers at the Centurion Gold Mine in Primrose, Germiston, have downed tools in protest against their working conditions. The National Union of Mineworkers said on Thursday that about 600 workers had gone on strike since Wednesday.
