The most influential provincial leadership of South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) has voted in favour of President Thabo Mbeki remaining head of the ruling party next year, a potential blow to his former deputy, Jacob Zuma. Political analysts said the resolution signalled the start of the fiercest contest for the leadership of the ANC in its 94-year history.

The Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) has ruled in favour of the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) on the party’s complaint against the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) description of Pretoria as Tshwane. The BCCSA on Monday said the FF+ had complained about inaccurate news reporting by the public broadcaster.

A Rwandan witness has accused a French judge of distorting his testimony in a probe into the killing of a former president that sparked the country’s genocide. It was the latest blow to Judge Jean-Louis Bruguiere, who has been heavily criticised by Rwanda after calling for President Paul Kagame, a Tutsi, to face trial over the assassination of his Hutu predecessor in 1994.

Former opposition parties and independent candidates have won Mauritania’s first parliamentary election since the ouster of Maaouiya Ould Taya, who ruled for 21 years, state media said on Monday. A coalition of ex-opposition parties has won 41 seats of the 95 seats in the new National Assembly after Sunday’s second round of voting.

Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa on Monday refuted a weekend media report that the Bombela consortium lobbied the provincial government to push up the cost of the Gautrain. ”I want to assure the house that those allegations are false and without substance,” Shilowa told the provincial legislature. The paper reported that the provincial government deviated from normal tender procedures.

Annanias Mathe, the Mozambican prisoner who escaped from Pretoria’s C-Max jail on November 18, was shot, wounded and arrested in Tembisa on the East Rand of Gauteng on Monday, police said. Mathe was arrested after he stole a car with a tracking device from a house in Craighall Park, national police spokesperson Director Sally de Beer said.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) spends 14 times more on peacekeeping operations outside South Africa than it does on supporting the South African Police Service’s fight against crime within the country, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. The SANDF spent R793,3-million on peace support operations during 2005/06, it said.

Lebanon’s army deployed more soldiers in Beirut on Monday after the killing of a pro-Syrian Shi’ite Muslim demonstrator raised fears anti-government protests could turn into sectarian violence. Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa warned the crisis could worsen and indicated he had discussed ideas for a solution with Lebanese officials during a 24-hour visit to Beirut.

Former Australia coach Eddie Jones has become the first man to throw his hat into the ring publicly as the successor to former England trainer Andy Robinson. Jones, who took Australia to the World Cup final in 2003 where they lost to England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson’s last-minute drop goal, was sacked a year ago following a run of eight defeats in nine games.
