Mike Hussey has warned his Australian teammates to watch out for Monty Panesar’s ”Doosra” should he form a two-pronged spinning attack for England in Friday’s second Ashes cricket Test in Adelaide. England coach Duncan Fletcher said on Tuesday he was considering playing both left-arm spinners, Ashley Giles and Panesar, in Adelaide.

Joseph Kabila was officially declared the winner on Monday of the first free elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 41 years after the Supreme Court ruled out a legal challenge by the losing candidate. Kabila was ”elected by absolute majority president of the Democratic Republic of Congo”, Supreme Court chief Benoit Iwamba said.

It was cramped, often bitterly cold, and had a railway line running through it yet Ireland’s Lansdowne Road — the world’s oldest rugby union Test venue — will be much missed. Ireland played their last Test at the Dublin stadium on Sunday, bidding the ”grand Old Lady” farewell in fine style.

The armed forces in Southern Africa are moving too slowly towards gender transformation, Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota said on Tuesday. ”It is still considered a man’s thing, war is considered a man’s thing … where is the basis of this backwards attitude of men?” Lekota asked, citing several examples of woman leaders in South African history.

Since day one the only thing that South Africa rugby coach Jake White has been focused on is the 2007 World Cup in France. He again stated so on Saturday when the Springboks beat England 25-14 at Twickenham. ”It’s the World Cup that we’ve been working towards and this victory [over England] has given us a major boost ahead of facing them in France,” said White.

The gross domestic product (GDP) increased by an annual rate of 4,7% in the third quarter compared to the second quarter of 2006, Statistics SA said on Tuesday. The real annual GDP increased by 5,1% in 2005 following an increase of 4,8% in 2004.

China’s top safety official shouted and pounded his desk in anger at mine owners and local officials for ”utter disregard for workers’ lives” after a string of deadly mining accidents, state media reported on Tuesday. Li Yizhong, director of the State Administration of Work Safety, became incensed during a teleconference with officials on Monday, the China Daily said.
