Indigenous evergreen forests comprise only 0,56% of South Africa’s land surface area. These forests form the smallest of our natural biomes, made up mostly of tiny slivers and corners, coppices scattered across the land. There are the greater forests of Knysna and places like Dukuduku in KwaZulu-Natal, but political, social and commercial forces are putting enormous strain on these.

A 64-year-old Palestinian woman blew herself up as a suicide bomber in Gaza on Thursday in an attack on Israeli troops. Two soldiers were slightly injured when the woman, apparently a supporter of the Hamas militant group, detonated explosives strapped to her body, becoming the conflict’s oldest suicide bomber.

French film star Philippe Noiret, whose trademark hangdog face delighted cinema audiences, has died, French authorities said on Thursday. He was 76. Noiret was one of the most prolific and successful actors of his generation, starring in a string of cinema hits over the past five decades, including the hugely popular 1988 Franco-Italian comedy Cinema Paradiso.

Police on Friday said that the man who escaped from the high-security C-Max prison in Pretoria on the weekend has ”the luck of the devil”. ”He must be the devil’s child himself because we get new leads every day but he has not yet been arrested,” said investigating officer Arnold Boonstra. ”He seems to have the luck of the devil.”

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Tony Leon on Friday accused the Presidency of ”a glaring double standard” in its treatment of police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi. Writing in his weekly newsletter, Leon referred to the September 7 2003 allegation that then-National Prosecuting Authority director Bulelani Ngcuka had been a police spy during the apartheid era.
