The extension of the African Union’s mandate in Sudan’s Darfur was welcomed on Thursday by all sides but tough negotiations on a transition to a United Nations peacekeeping force were set to continue. ”The extension is welcome and would have been much better if it had been extended even longer,” State Foreign Minister al-Sammani al-Wasila al-Sammani said.

China is not exactly the flavour of the month at the Congress of South Africa Trade Unions’ (Cosatu) national congress, but ironically its textile-exporting muscle is amply demonstrated in the entrance hall of the Gallagher Estate venue. The four-day congress ends on Thursday, and various businesses have informal stands in the entrance hall advertising their services.

A maiden century by Mark Boucher helped South Africa show their dominance over Zimbabwe with a stunning 171-run victory in the third and final MTN one-day international (ODI) at Sedgars Park, Potchefstroom, on Wednesday. Jacques Kallis won the toss and chose to bat — and South Africa put on an enormous 418-5 in their 50 overs.

Ugly history repeated itself on Wednesday night when Kaizer Chiefs supporters went on the rampage after their team’s 2-1 Premier soccer League (PSL) defeat against Bidvest Wits University at the FNB Stadium. Enraged fans, in a 6Â 000 crowd, tore seats from their fixtures and hurled them on to the pitch.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has not showered itself with glory in their dealings with the Jacob Zuma affair. The decision by Judge Qedusizi Msimang to strike the Zuma matter off the roll is a public-relations disaster which started with National Prosecuting Authority boss Bulelani Ngcuka declaring in 2003 that he had a "prima facie" against Zuma.
