Mall shooting suspect: ‘Just follow the screams’

A man accused of a shooting spree at a crowded Washington state shopping mall told authorities to ”just follow the screams” when he called them shortly before opening fire with a pair of assault rifles, according to court documents. Plans for making bombs and poison gas were later found after a search of the man’s car and bedroom, prosecutors said.

Report details harmful effects of ocean noise

Increasing levels of ocean noise generated by military sonar, shipping, and oil and gas exploration is threatening dolphins and whales that rely on sound for mating, finding food and avoiding predators, according to a new report. The report found that the affects of ocean noise on marine life range from long-term behavioral change to hearing loss to death.

Ex-SABC journalist joins al-Jazeera

Middle East-based news channel al-Jazeera International has opened offices in Johannesburg and has hired former South African Broadcasting Corporation senior reporter Kalay Maistry as its Southern Africa correspondent. Maistry, who has extensive broadcast journalism experience, described joining the channel as a ”fresh challenge”.

Aids: Dept of Health blames old govt

Government inaction before 1994 is the main reason why HIV infection has not been curbed, the Department of Health said on Tuesday. A new report on HIV/Aids by the United Nations and the World Health Organisation noted this week that at least 85% of South Africans needing anti-retroviral drugs had not received them by mid-2005.

Zimbabwe dreaming of a nuclear future

Zimbabwe’s plans to process its uranium deposits into energy will slash the huge amounts the power-starved country pays to import electricity, Energy Minister Mike Nyambuya said on Monday. ”When we exploit it, we would like to use it for peaceful purposes and reduce our electricity importation bill,” the minister said.
