Reflecting a return to positive bottom-line profitability, IT group Dimension Data plc (Didata) on Wednesday reported basic earnings per share of 1,3 United States cents for the year to the end of September after a loss of 2,8 US cents the previous year. However, adjusted earnings per share amounted to 1,4 US cents compared with 0,9 US cents previously.

China said on Wednesday it would not tolerate any interference over Taiwan, after United States President George Bush praised the island’s democracy and urged Beijing to open dialogue with Taipei. ”Taiwan is a part of China, an inseparable part of China, and China does not brook any interference in its internal affairs,” said Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing.

South African industrial brands group Barloworld on Wednesday reported a 5% increase in headline earnings per share to 893,6 cents for the year ended September 30, from 853,2 cents a year ago. On a fully diluted basis, headline earnings per share were 873,6 cents from 833 cents previously.

Listed South African retailer Edgars Consolidated Stores (Edcon) has reported a 28% rise in diluted headline earnings per share to 109 cents for the six months to the end of September 2005, versus 85 cents in the year-earlier period. The company declared an interim dividend of 62 cents per share.

Prince Albert II is to be formally invested as ruler of Monaco this week in a series of ceremonies taking place in the Mediterranean microstate synonymous with high living, gambling and jet-set glamour. The high point of the ceremonies, which coincide with Monaco’s national holiday, will take place on Thursday in the royal palace, when Albert is to take a solemn vow before representatives of the state.

A series of tremors shook the Driefontein mine near Carletonville on Tuesday, injuring 17 mineworkers, Gold Fields confirmed. Two miners were taken to hospital — one with a broken hand and another with a broken arm — said Billy Jacobsz, spokesperson for Gold Fields.
