Govt settles R4m land claim

An estimated R4-million land claim settlement agreement has been signed between the Northern Cape provincial agriculture department and the community of Smauswane outside Kuruman, SABC news reported on Saturday. According to the report, the community was forcibly removed from the land in 1942.

Egypt won’t hand over bombing suspect

Egypt says it is not prepared to hand over a biochemist detained in connection with the London bombings, Egyptian security officials said on Saturday, as British investigators attended sessions questioning him. British investigators reportedly found traces of explosives in a bathtub of the biochemist’s apartment in Leeds.

Bulls trample Eagles

The Blue Bulls demolished the Eagles 83-6 in a section Y Currie Cup game at Outeniqua Park on Saturday, showing their intentions in defending the Currie Cup for a fourth time. The Bulls had a 39-6 lead at the break and scored 11 tries in the match, ten of them by their backline.

UDM, UCDP members defect to ANC

Forty-two former members of the United Democratic Movement and the United Christian Democratic Party joined the Africa National Congress in the North West on Saturday. Provincial ANC spokesperson Sam Makaila said the majority of the new members were from the UCDP’s women’s league.

Man in court on race slur charges

A Brackenfell, Cape Town, man will go on trial in October for allegedly saying to a petrol attendant, ”Hey kaffir, come here.” Adriaan Deacon (30) on Friday made his eighth appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court since the alleged incident involving Phikile Nkqinqa in May last year.

Europe tries to dilute G8 debt relief deal

A group of small European countries are seeking to water down key proposals agreed last week by G8 leaders in Gleneagles, leaked documents have revealed. The documents showed that Belgium was leading an initiative that would make it more difficult for 18 of the world’s poorest countries to be granted 100% debt relief.

Mugabe, friend of South Africa

President Robert Mugabe on Friday stressed Zimbabwe’s solidarity with South Africa, defying reports of mounting pressure on the South African government to take a hardline stance towards its crisis-ridden northern neighbour. Mugabe said his country is ”pleased to continue our solidarity and comradeship” with South Africa.

Moyo now writing his ‘memoirs’

President Robert Mugabe’s former spin doctor Jonathan Moyo, sacked earlier this year for defying Zimbabwe’s ruling party, is working on a book about his time in government, a newspaper reported Friday. Once seen as Mugabe’s blue-eyed boy, the former information minister has become a fierce critic of the Zimbabwean government.
