Full points for Sundowns

Sundowns left Cape Town with full points when they beat a plucky Ajax Cape Town 2-0 in a Castle Premier Soccer League game played at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night. Orlando Pirates thumped Bloemfontein Celtic 3-0 at Ellis Park and Silver Stars beat a 10-man Moroka Swallows 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Nadal’s hard-court title dream draws closer

Rafael Nadal made up for lost time on a day of rain interruptions, racing to a 6-1, 6-2 victory on Wednesday night over Brazilian Ricardo Mello for a third-round place at the ,2-million Montreal Masters. The top-seeded teenager will have only hours to recover before a Thursday match against Sebastien Grosjean.

South African rugby coach Jake White was the ultimate diplomat on Thursday when his team arrived in Australia, saying a draw would be his favoured outcome when Tri-Nations rivals Australia and New Zealand play on Saturday. White believes injuries in the Australian and New Zealand camps make squad depth the key factor.

Cabbies to give condoms to frisky passengers

Taxi drivers in the southern English seaside town of Brighton will start handing out free condoms to frisky late-night passengers on Thursday as part of a sexual health drive, a contraceptives firm said. The ”Safe Ride Home” scheme by Trojan will equip cabbies from the Brighton-based firm Radio Cabs with about 60 000 condoms to give to any passenger who asks.

Supersport held in action-packed draw

Action aplenty, goals in abundance and controversial incidents were the features of the 2-2 Premier League draw between Supersport United and Santos at the Loftus stadium in Pretoria on Wednesday night. Rookie Madison clinches long-jump gold

United States teenager Tianna Madison stunned her more experienced rivals by taking the women’s long-jump title at the world athletics championships in Finland on Wednesday. The 19-year-old jumped 6,89m in her first major championships to beat Olympic bronze medallist Tatyana Kotova of Russia (6,79m) while defending champion Eunice Barber of France took the bronze (6,76m).

Thirty rebels killed in Columbia

At least 30 rebels died in an aerial bombardment of their camps in northwestern Colombia, authorities said on Wednesday. Colombian Air Force combat aircraft bombed three rural areas along a border between the provinces of Antioquia and Choco, west of Medellin, where rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) were camped.
