Bafana Bafana injury list grows

Bafana Bafana preparations suffered another blow on Monday when Sibusiso ”Rhee” Zuma was ruled out of the squad to play Cape Verde in a World Cup and Afcon 2006 qualifier on Saturday, due to injury. Apart from Zuma, there is doubt about the availability of South Africa’s number-one goalkeeper, Hans Vonk.

Beckham, Owen happy to stay with Real Madrid

David Beckham and Michael Owen say they intend to stay with Real Madrid next season. The two stars joined the English national team in the United States on Monday, a day ahead of the exhibition game against Colombia that concludes a two-game tour. ”I’m happy in Real Madrid. Anglo blasts claims by miners’ lawyer

Anglo American will vigorously defend itself against claims by gold miners that they contracted respiratory diseases while working for the mining giant, a company spokesperson said on Monday. ”The matter is in the hands of the court. We do not believe that Anglo American is liable and we will vigorously defend the claims,” Daniel Ngwepe said.

World soccer champ dropped from Brazil team

Three-time Fifa player of the year Ronaldo was dropped from the Brazilian national team for two World Cup qualifiers and the Confederations Cup, the Brazilian soccer confederation said on Monday. ”Ronaldo claimed personal problems that prevent him from dedicating himself to the team at the moment,” Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said.

Six die in KFC burned by mob in Karachi

Six people were killed when a KFC restaurant was set on fire by a mob angry about a suicide attack on a Shi’ite mosque in Karachi, bringing the overall death toll to 11, police said on Tuesday. The fast-food chicken restaurant was targeted in overnight rioting after Monday’s attack on the Madinatul Ilm Imambargah mosque.

African business to push British aid plan

African business leaders attending this week’s World Economic Forum (WEF) for Africa will come up with ways to back a British plan for massive aid for the continent whose fate is to be decided at the Group of Eight summit in July, organisers said on Friday. The 15th WEF for Africa meeting will feature a strong South African presence.
