New initiatives to slash costs of formula one

Formula-one chiefs are stepping up their campaign to slash escalating costs with cutbacks in testing as well as reducing the mini army of people on team duty at grand-prix weekends being proposed. The governing body of the sport, the FIA, believes significant savings can be found by restrictions on testing and by reverting to just one tyre supplier.

Chiefs’ birthday boy brings in the goals

Defending champions Kaizer Chiefs moved into second place in the Castle Premiership when they defeated Black Leopards 3-0 in their Premier Soccer League fixture played at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday night. Collins Mbesuma, who celebrated his 21st birthday in style after the game in which he scored the opening two goals for Amakhosi.

Davenport, Dementieva advance in Tokyo

World number one Lindsay Davenport and Russia’s Elena Dementieva advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament with victories over Japanese opponents in Tokyo on Thursday. American top seed Davenport faced a tougher-than-expected challenge before beating Saori Obata 6-4, 6-3 in 64 minutes.

Cosmos ease relegation woes

Jomo Cosmos eased their relegation woes when they beat a struggling Santos 2-0 in a Castle Premier Soccer League match played at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night. Santos, on the other hand, now face a real danger of being relegated. Both goals were scored in the first half.

Match ends in thrilling tie

The second Standard Bank one-day international between South Africa and England played in Bloemfontein on Wednesday ended in a thrilling tie which kept the capacity crowd glued to their seats right to the end. Both sides scored 270 runs in their 50 overs. England go into the third match in Port Elizabeth on Friday with a 1-0 lead.

Cosatu, Zim unionists regroup south of the border

A delegation of the Zimbabwean Congress of Trade Unions will meet members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Limpopo on Thursday. On Wednesday a Cosatu delegation were refused entry into Zimbabwe. On Thursday, the Zimbabwean Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi said the incident would not affect relations between the two countries.
