Hollywood stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Tim Robbins will be this year’s recipients of the annual Hasty Pudding awards, given by a student drama group at Harvard University. The awards, announced on Wednesday, are given to performers who have made a ”lasting and impressive contribution to the world of entertainment”.

Trusting in God may make people with strong religious beliefs take more risks when crossing the road, according to a team of scientists in Israel. They found that devout Orthodox Jews were three times more likely to put themselves in danger from traffic than their secular neighbours.

Formula-one chiefs are stepping up their campaign to slash escalating costs with cutbacks in testing as well as reducing the mini army of people on team duty at grand-prix weekends being proposed. The governing body of the sport, the FIA, believes significant savings can be found by restrictions on testing and by reverting to just one tyre supplier.

World number one Lindsay Davenport and Russia’s Elena Dementieva advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament with victories over Japanese opponents in Tokyo on Thursday. American top seed Davenport faced a tougher-than-expected challenge before beating Saori Obata 6-4, 6-3 in 64 minutes.

The second Standard Bank one-day international between South Africa and England played in Bloemfontein on Wednesday ended in a thrilling tie which kept the capacity crowd glued to their seats right to the end. A delegation of the Zimbabwean Congress of Trade Unions will meet members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Limpopo on Thursday. On Wednesday a Cosatu delegation were refused entry into Zimbabwe. On Thursday, the Zimbabwean Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi said the incident would not affect relations between the two countries.
