Boeing chief fired for office affair

The chief executive who vowed to repair the tarnished reputation of Boeing on Monday fell victim to his own scandal when he was fired for conducting an affair with one of the company’s female executives. Harry Stonecipher was hired to help steady the defence and aeroplane company after it was sent reeling by revelations of misconduct in securing Pentagon contracts.

Police make headway in prince’s murder probe

Police have identified suspects who may be responsible for the murder of Zulu prince and African National Congress branch chairperson Thulani Zulu. ”There are definite suspects who have been positively identified,” KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Bheki Cele said on Monday. Zulu was killed in a drive-by shooting last Wednesday.

After 24 years at the frontlines of journalism in the United States, CBS News anchor Dan Rather will deliver the evening news for the last time on Wednesday, six months after apologising for an error-riddled report critical of US President George Bush’s military service. His five-decade career will effectively end under the cloud of the September report.

Serious cyclone warning sounded for Australia

Forecasters sounded an alert on Tuesday over a cyclone heading for Australia’s coast with wind gusts up to 290kph, saying that if the storm strikes a town directly it could be more destructive than one that killed 65 people three decades ago. The storm is ”a very serious threat” to coastal and island communities between the Lockhart River and Port Douglas.

Offset deals fail to get off the ground

Swedish aircraft manufacturer Saab and British-based BAE Systems exaggerated planned offset investments in order to sell their aircraft to South Africa, Swedish radio said on Monday. The public broadcaster said it had analysed the number of investments pledged by the companies, but found that most of them never came to fruition.

Rooney, Ferguson investigated by FA

Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney are reportedly being investigated by the Football Association (FA) for their behaviour during Manchester United’s goalless draw at Crystal Palace. It has emerged the FA will also scrutinise Rooney’s conduct after the final whistle, when he had to be restrained during a confrontation with referee Mark Clattenburg.

Grieving Nicklaus to spend time with his family

Jack Nicklaus had planned to squeeze in a few trips to Augusta National this month, making sure his 65-year-old body was fit and his game was good enough to compete in the Masters. Now, the Masters is the last thing on his mind. Nicklaus said his chances of playing the Masters are ”between slim and none,” although he plans to be at Augusta National for the Champions Dinner.
