Old Mutual, South Africa’s largest insurer, will unveil details of its black economic empowerment (BEE) plans in the "near future", its CEO has confirmed. The group has been working on a transaction involving the sale of a 10% stake in its South African operations, as well as Nedcor and Mutual & Federal, to black empowerment partners.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting and his New Zealand counterpart Stephen Fleming came to the defence of speed bowler Brett Lee on Monday over allegations of dangerous bowling. New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum was involved in an angry exchange with Lee during Saturday’s match in Auckland after he was struck on the arm by a waist high full toss from the Australian.

A dangerous humanitarian crisis is looming in the Democratic Republic of Congo with sharply increasing unrest in the Ituri region where nine United Nations soldiers were killed on Friday, the UN warned. Observers say attempts to block the disarming of local rebels could jeopardise the transitional process designed to bring peace to the vast central African state.

Jef Raskin, a computer interface expert who conceived Apple Computer’s groundbreaking Macintosh computer but left the company before it came to market, has died. He was 61. Raskin died on Saturday night at his home in Pacifica, his family said in a statement.

Listed mobile network MTN Group announced on Monday that it had signed a contract worth around $15-million with United Kingdom-based Intec Telecom Systems for a new customer billing system using Intec’s Singl.eView software. The new system will handle billing for the mobile group’s South African operation which has over 7,7-million subscribers.
