Troubled Vilakazi steers Pirates to victory

Orlando Pirates’ Benedict Vilakazi, who was this week charged with the alleged rape of a minor, put his problems off the field behind him as he helped steer the Bucs to a 3-1 victory over Manning Rangers and a nine-point lead at the top of the Castle Premiership. Vilakazi — who has denied the allegations — scored the opening goal.

What the formula-one rebels promised

Manufacturers planning a breakaway formula-one world championship claimed on Wednesday that their series will be fairer and more cost-effective than the established competition. BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Honda, Renault and Toyota, who make up the Grand Prix World Championship, met nine of the formula-one teams in London to outline their proposals.

Roddick advances in Memphis

Top seed Andy Roddick eased into the quarterfinals of the ATP side of the men’s and women’s tennis tournaments playing in Memphis on Wednesday with a straight-set victory over France’s Arnaud Clement. Roddick, seeking his 17th career ATP title and his second in as many weeks, cruised past Clement 6-3, 6-3 in a second-round clash.

Kumba declares 18-month dividend

Mining company Kumba Resources declared a final dividend of 90 cents per share for the 18-month period ending in December 2004, the company said on Thursday. ”This will result in a total dividend for the period of 145 cents per share,” said Con Fauconnier, Kumba’s Chief Executive Officer.

Economist predicts increase in sin taxes

An increase in sin taxes and the fuel levy are predicted in this month’s Budget speech, according to a tax expert at financial services firm Deloitte. ”In line with prior years, we expect inflationary increases on most alcoholic beverages, with low increases on traditional African beer,” said Duane Newman.
