Orlando Pirates’ Benedict Vilakazi, who was this week charged with the alleged rape of a minor, put his problems off the field behind him as he helped steer the Bucs to a 3-1 victory over Manning Rangers and a nine-point lead at the top of the Castle Premiership. Vilakazi — who has denied the allegations — scored the opening goal.

Supersport United were held to a 0-0 draw by Ajax Cape Town during their Castle Premier League encounter at Odi Stadium in Mabopane on Wednesday night. There were very few highlights in this game as both teams squandered one opportunity after another in front of an almost empty stadium.

Manufacturers planning a breakaway formula-one world championship claimed on Wednesday that their series will be fairer and more cost-effective than the established competition. BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Honda, Renault and Toyota, who make up the Grand Prix World Championship, met nine of the formula-one teams in London to outline their proposals.

Mining company Kumba Resources declared a final dividend of 90 cents per share for the 18-month period ending in December 2004, the company said on Thursday. ”This will result in a total dividend for the period of 145 cents per share,” said Con Fauconnier, Kumba’s Chief Executive Officer.

A villager in northeastern Zimbabwe was killed when five landmines he dug up to use against marauding elephants exploded in his arms, news reports said on Wednesday. Christian Munetsi had planned to use the mines to protect his maize field from elephants that roam the remote Rushinga district.
