Protesters marching against the Johannesburg City Council’s installation of pre-paid water meters on Tuesday refused to hand over their memorandum of grievances and demands to anyone other than the mayor, Amos Masondo. It was the sixth time in a row that Masondo had failed to turn up, said organiser Trevor Ngwane.

A Nigerian court has sentenced a man to death by hanging for conspiring with others to kill his wife as part of a money-making magic ritual, a court official said on Tuesday. The man was said to have conspired with ritualists who had promised him money to remove vital organs such as his wife’s right eye, right breast and genitals.

More than 25% of married couples in Briton have lost one or both of their wedding rings since tying the knot, according to a survey released on Tuesday. Researchers found that 15% of brides had lost their original wedding ring, with one in 10 grooms also admitting to losing the traditional symbol of eternal love and commitment.

The South African government has never taken sides in Zimbabwe between the ruling Zanu-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Deputy President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday. Replying to questions in the National Council of Provinces, he said South Africa has been in discussions with both sides in Zimbabwe.

A fight broke out near the stage at the Vibe awards ceremony on Monday as rapper Snoop Dogg and producer Quincy Jones were preparing to honour Dr Dre, and one person was stabbed, authorities and witnesses said. News video showed chairs being thrown, punches flying, people chasing one another and some being restrained.

The Mozambican Parliament on Tuesday unanimously adopted a new Constitution for the first time since the advent of multiparty politics in the Southern African nation. The new Constitution adopted on Tuesday will come into force after elections on December 1 and 2 to elect a successor to President Joaquim Chissano.

Sheila Weinberg, anti-apartheid activist and member of the Gauteng legislature, has died at the age of 56, the legislature announced on Tuesday. In 1964, Weinberg became the youngest detainee in South Africa when, at the age of 17, she was held at the Johannesburg Fort under the 90-day detention law.
