A furious row has broken out over claims in a new book by BBC broadcaster James Naughtie that United States Secretary of State Colin Powell described neo-conservatives in the Bush administration as ‘fucking crazies’ during the build-up to war in Iraq. Powell’s extraordinary outburst is alleged to have taken place during a telephone conversation with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.

The Caribbean nation of Jamaica became the second major victim of Hurricane Ivan on Saturday as waves the height of two-storey houses and 250kph winds smashed into the island. The storm, which has already brought destruction to Grenada — and is forecast next to strike the Cayman Islands, Cuba, then southern Florida — slammed into Jamaica early on Saturday.

The search for Cape Town’s missing hippo was set to take to the air late on Saturday morning as nature conservation officials prepared to board a helicopter to view Zeekoevlei where the animal is hiding. Game capture expert Douw Grobler has been flown in from the Limpopo province to assist with the recapture of the animal.

Police in the Indian capital Delhi said they have uncovered a racket involving 50 illegal kidney transplants, reports said on Saturday. The scam was revealed when a 24-year-old construction worker went to police alleging his kidney had been removed without his knowledge. It had been transplanted and given to a soldier’s wife in the main military hospital in Delhi, the Indian Express newspaper reported.

Insurgents launched two separate rocket attacks in the Baghdad region on Saturday, but caused no damage or injuries, the military said. The first rocket landed in central Baghdad at 6:30am. An hour later, insurgents attacked a multinational forces base just north of the capital. – Sapa-AP

The Jamaican prime minister, PJ Patterson, declared a state of emergency and pleaded with half a million people living in vulnerable areas to leave their homes as Hurricane Ivan raced towards the island on Friday night. ”Residents living near coastal areas must evacuate before it’s too late,” Patterson said in an address to the nation.
