Milk cancels health benefit of drinking tea

Drinking tea can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke but only if milk is not added to the brew, German scientists said on Tuesday. Research has shown that tea improves blood flow and the ability of the arteries to relax but researchers at the Charite Hospital at the University of Berlin in Mitte found milk eliminates the protective effect against cardiovascular disease.

ANC rally open to the public

The African National Congress’s (ANC) 95th anniversary rally will be open to the general public, the party confirmed on Wednesday. Spokesperson Steyn Speed said the party wanted to correct an impression that people attending the rally would have to submit their ID numbers in order to attend.

Zim turns to Pakistan army for assistance

The cash-strapped Zimbabwe government will fork out hundreds of thousands of United States dollars to pay Pakistani military experts to help train and equip its army, which has been weakened by mass resignations. Safdara Hayat, the first secretary at the Pakistani embassy in Harare, confirmed the arrival of the first four senior military experts from the Asian country.

Sudan softens stance on UN troops

Khartoum has softened its stance on United Nations troops being deployed to Darfur, leaving the door open for blue-helmeted international troops to protect civilians in its vast west, a presidential adviser said on Monday. Khartoum has rejected UN Security Council Resolution 1706 authorising 22 500 UN troops and police to take over the Darfur peacekeeping mission.

ANC gears up for birthday celebrations

The African National Congress (ANC), which turned 95 years old on Monday, will celebrate its anniversary with a mass rally in Witbank, Mpumalanga, on Saturday. The party said in a statement it was expecting 20 000 people to attend the rally, with President Thabo Mbeki being the main speaker for the day.

Confusion at judge’s court ‘appearance’

Confusion reigned at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday when a Pretoria High Court judge arrested for drunken driving failed to appear at the court. After waiting outside the court for about half an hour, journalists learnt that Judge Nkola Motata, who was arrested on Friday, had already been released on bail. He will appear at the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court on February 27.

ANC: No date yet on Goniwe appeal

The African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee (NEC) has yet to decide when it will hear an appeal by former chief whip Mbulelo Goniwe against his expulsion. ”I’m not sure when the NEC will make a decision on that,” ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said on Thursday. ”It is the NEC that will take a decision on the matter.”
