Kruger park launches zero-tolerance campaign

In an attempt to ensure the smooth running of the Kruger National Park during the festive season, the park launched a ”zero-tolerance” campaign on Wednesday. Running until January 2, Operation Sledgehammer will see park personnel and the police working together to ensure that ”law breakers” were brought to book.

Bali climate talks advance despite squabbling

A 190-nation climate meeting in Bali took small steps towards a new global deal to fight global warming by 2009 on Tuesday amid disputes about how far China and India should curb rising greenhouse-gas emissions. Yvo de Boer, the United Nations’s top climate official, praised the December 3 to 14 meeting of 10 000 participants for progress.

Women to march for gender equality in ANC

A march by gender activists in protest at the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League nominations of mostly men for the party’s top six positions would take place this week. Chief executive of the Gender and Media Southern Africa network Kubi Rama on Tuesday said the women would participate in the march on Wednesday.

US to slap new sanctions on Zim

The United States will slap travel and financial sanctions on about 40 more people with ties to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, who has cracked down hard on dissent, a senior US official said on Monday. ”Mugabe’s tyranny needs to end,” said US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer.

Manuel says balanced growth needed

Higher inflation and deterioration in South Africa’s current account over the past year highlight the need for more balanced growth, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said on Monday. But it appeared that growth was becoming more balanced, with tentative signs that consumption was easing on higher interest rates, he said in a written reply to a parliamentary question.

Mbeki, Zuma confirm candidacies for ANC

South African President Thabo Mbeki and his arch-rival, Jacob Zuma, have both officially confirmed they are candidates for party chief of the African National Congress (ANC), their offices said Monday. ”Mr Jacob Zuma signed the ANC nomination form over the weekend in London,” Zuma’s spokesperson, Ranjeni Munusamy, said.

ANCYL warns of tensions under ‘two presidents’

Having two presidents — of the country and the African National Congress (ANC) — could cause tensions and instigate reactions unless properly managed, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) said on Sunday. The ANCYL backs ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma for election to the top job during the party’s national conference in Limpopo in two weeks.
