Winter storm makes a mess in US Northeast

Drivers in much of the American Northeast navigated a treacherous mix of rain, sleet and snow on Monday as a storm blamed for at least 11 deaths blanketed the region after glazing roads in the Midwest. Schools cancelled or delayed classes from New York to Maine as highways turned slippery and wind gusted to 64km/h.

Soldier’s statue hit by cutbacks

Government cutbacks in New York are hitting a continental soldier below the belt. The statue of Copper John, a continental soldier who sits atop the state’s Auburn Correctional Facility, was removed earlier this summer for renovation. The beloved figure is set to return to his perch this fall, albeit a lesser man.
