Birds beat Celtic 3-1 in last-minute thriller

The Birds left it late — then swooped to a scintillating 3-1 Absa Premiership win over Bloemfontein Celtic with three goals in the last ten minutes of play. After Malawian defender Patrick Mabedi had equalised for Moroka Swallows, with a superbly timed header in the 79th minute, the team completed their scoring spree with late goals from substitutes Sandile Ndlovu and Alfred Phiri.

Good fortune helps Wits top the log

Wits University moved to the top of the Premier Soccer League log following a bruising 1-0 victory over Moroka Swallows on Friday — also due to a stroke of apparent good fortune when referee Daniel Bennett turned down a concerted injury-time penalty appeal by the Birds.

Swallows continue PSL nosedive

The nosedive of Moroka Swallows continued in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Sunday afternoon as the ailing Birds plunged to a 3-1 home defeat against Jomo Cosmos at the Germiston Stadium. A flurry of three goals in the last five minutes comprehensively sealed Swallows’ fate.

SuperSport, Wits get the points

SuperSport United beat Moroka Swallows 2-1 in their Premier Soccer League game played at Germiston Stadium on Friday night, and Bidvest Wits beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 in their match. Part of the game in Germiston was played in heavy rain and referee Robert Smith was forced to stop the match for 15 minutes.

Swallows, Leopards can learn from Boks

After watching — and fanatically celebrating — the Springboks’ emphatic victory in the Rugby World Cup final, the Premier Soccer League game between Moroka Swallows and Black Leopards on Sunday paled in comparison. A 91st-minute goal had Swallows coach Ian Gorowa obviously relieved at getting the three points.

PSL back in action after world break

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) gets going this Sunday after the major leagues of the world came to a halt for international friendlies and continental qualifying games. On Sunday, five games will be played around the country. The pick of the bunch is SuperSport United hosting Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
