CEF to roll out solar-powered traffic lights

The savage gridlock that has characterised power failures in major centres recently could soon be a thing of the past if the Central Energy Fund’s (CEF) plan to install solar-powered traffic lights comes to fruition. Thousands of traffic lights have been earmarked for solar-power installations in a number of cities and towns.

Clicks makes the switch to save energy

Major retailer Clicks announced on Tuesday that it has crushed more than 56 000 of the conventional light bulbs it stocked and is now only selling energy-efficient bulbs. While this comes at some cost to Clicks, it will help conserve energy and protect the environment, the company said in Johannesburg.

Cape Town gets solar traffic lights

South Africa’s first solar-powered traffic lights were switched on in Cape Town at noon on Monday. Located at the intersection of Edna Street and Montagu’s Gift Road, south of Ottery, the four pairs of lights draw their power, via batteries, from solar panels on top of poles.
