Germany triumph 2-0 over Brazil at World Cup

A solid defence and clinical efficiency in front of goal allowed Germany to triumph 2-0 over a desperate Brazil to become the first back-to-back winners of the women’s World Cup on Sunday. German midfielder Simone Laudehr’s headed goal in the dying minutes sealed the win, after evergreen captain Birgit Prinz had coolly slotted home a crossed ball.

As the England boys prepared to face Russia, there was only one topic of conversation going round the dinner table: how the women had fared against Japan the previous day. It was good to hear all the lads talking about it, along with the other results from the Women’s Soccer World Cup.

Germany eye victory in women’s Soccer World Cup

When Germany’s women played their first international soccer game 25 years ago, school kids were bussed in to fill the stands and the public was at best bemused by the sight. Nobody is laughing now. Germany are the reigning world champions, the games are broadcast live on national television, the stadiums are full and the women command as much respect as their male colleagues.
