Sharks coach Dick Muir, who made a belated attempt to be considered as Springbok coach after incumbent Jake White’s term expires, will not be in line for the position. This follows a resolution by the South African Rugby Union’s president’s council, which met in Johannesburg on Thursday.

World Cup-winning South Africa coach Jake White has held talks with England rugby chiefs, a media report said on Sunday. White guided South Africa to a 15-6 victory over England in the World Cup final at the Stade de France in Paris on October 20 and announced on Wednesday that he would quit his post in December.

The Free State Cheetahs advanced to the Absa Currie Cup rugby final against the Lions when they beat the Blue Bulls 11-6 in Bloemfontein on Saturday. The soggy underfoot evened out the odds, with the Cheetahs running on as favourites after losing only one of their 14 league matches.
The Free State Cheetahs pulled off the double over the Blue Bulls with a near-clinical 29-17 victory at Loftus Versfeld on Friday evening. The Bulls had begun with plenty of gusto but soon found themselves running out of steam and handing the game to the Cheetahs.
South Africa’s imposing lock forward, Bakkies Botha, has slimmed down for the World Cup but still has a huge appetite for success before he calls it quits. Botha is relishing a forward battle with Fiji in the quarterfinals on Sunday, where victory will keep the Springboks on course for a second world title and the 28-year-old on track for a half-century of caps.

South African Under-19 stars Francois Hougaard and Stephan Dippenaar have signed a three-year contract with the Blue Bulls. Hougaard is a strong scrumhalf who attended Paul Roos Gymnasium and, according to his agent, ”a very aggressive number nine with an excellent pass and outstanding defensive capabilities”.

There is no question of the South Africans taking their feet off the pedal after two convincing victories in their opening World Cup matches said coach Jake White on Sunday. The inspirational 43-year-old handler admitted they were on a high but would not now lose their way.

The Blue Bulls turned the corner and all but cemented their place in the semifinals of the Currie Cup with a comfortable 35-10 victory over Western Province at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. The hosts’ victory was made that much sweeter by the fact that they were able to also gain the bonus point as they breached the Western Province tryline four times.

The Blue Bulls look on course to fight until the end for a home semifinal berth after they ran over Griquas 46-3 in their Currie Cup encounter at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon. In Cape Town, Western Province kept their Currie Cup semifinal hopes alive when they thrashed the Boland Cavaliers 62-10 at Newlands.
