Defending champions Northern Bulls and seven-time winners Canterbury Crusaders launched their title bids with opening weekend bonus-point victories.
The last season of Super 14 in its current format kicks off on Friday with the Crusaders and the Bulls once again the teams to beat.
Canterbury Crusaders climbed into Super 14 semifinal contention with a 32-20 win over the Lions in Johannesburg on Friday.
New Zealand’s Canterbury Crusaders kept alive their Super 14 title hopes with a tense 16-13 win over the Bulls on Friday.
The Bulls surrendered their unbeaten record and fell from first to fourth place in the Super 14 rugby standings after a 36-12 loss to the Highlanders.

The Canterbury Crusaders go into this season’s Super 14 competition carrying the usual tag as favourites.
The Hurricanes and the Sharks battled to a 13-all draw in a controversial Super 14 rugby match played in atrocious conditions in Wellington on Saturday. Australian referee Paul Marks handed out a red card, a yellow card and awarded a penalty try, before ending the game without reacting to Hurricanes centre Conrad Smith being taken out of play in a potentially try-scoring move.

All Black coach Graham Henry attempted to save his job on Thursday during a grilling by New Zealand rugby officials in the wake of the team’s quickest-ever World Cup exit. In the past All Black coaches have quickly been discarded after failing to secure the World Cup. Henry has surprised commentators by choosing to fight to stay on.
