World oil traded near $97 a barrel in Asia on Friday, its highest level in a month, following the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, dealers said. They said the rise in prices was also supported by a United States report showing a higher-than-expected drop in US crude stockpiles.

Oil soared to record highs on Wednesday, drawing within a hair’s breadth of the milestone as the United States dollar plumbed new lows and the onset of cold weather stirred anxiety over winter supplies. US light crude for January delivery surged to a record of ,29 a barrel early in the session, but pared those gains to stand 61 cents higher at ,64.

Oil prices jumped to fresh historic highs on Monday, breaching $93 for the first time on mounting concerns about tight energy supplies worldwide, analysts said. Investors pushed up crude futures to new peaks as more bad news in the shape of Mexican production cutbacks came on top of already serious tensions in the Middle East.
