Woods wins third title of the year at Wachovia

Tiger Woods fired a three-under-par 69 in Charlotte on Sunday to hold off his rivals and win the ,4-million Wachovia Championship. Woods finished at 13-under 275 for his 57th career victory on the PGA Tour and his third in six starts this year. Steve Stricker (69) pulled his second shot into the creek at the brutal par-four 18th but salvaged a bogey to finish second at 277.

Woods, Singh surge to the top

Tiger Woods hit his stride early with three birdies through five holes and a collection of par saves that kept his round going. Vijay Singh came to life late with an eagle-birdie flurry to rescue an otherwise shaky round. It left them atop the leaderboard at the Wachovia Championship, setting up the possibility of a showdown.

Furyk beats Immelman in Quail Hollow reversal

Jim Furyk avenged last year’s playoff loss at the Wachovia Championship by returning for another try on Sunday, and claimed the crown with a six-foot putt on the first extra hole to beat South Africa’s Trevor Immelman. A hard-luck loser in a four-hole playoff last year, Furyk made an eight-foot par putt to force extra holes and then sunk the winner for par on number 18.

Furyk grabs lead with South Africans on his heels

United States veteran Jim Furyk fired a four-under par 68 on Saturday to grab a one-stroke lead over South Africans Retief Goosen and Trevor Immelman after three rounds of the United States PGA Wachovia Championship. Furyk, seeking his 12th career triumph and first since last year’s Western Open, stood on 11-under par 205 after 54 holes at the -million event.

Singh wins in play-off

Fiji’s Vijay Singh ran down Sergio Garcia and then outlasted Garcia and Jim Furyk in a three-way play-off, winning the ,6-million Wachovia Championship on the fourth hole of sudden death in North Carolina on Sunday. Singh and Furyk had both erased a six-shot deficit in regulation, posting final-round 66s.

Woods ready for Wachovia

Tiger Woods has sufficiently recovered from winning his ninth major and headlines the field at this week’s -million Wachovia Championship. Woods said the Masters win left him emotionally drained and that he recharged his batteries by going spear-fishing. He is well aware that his Masters victory hasn’t silenced all of his critics.
