Downs, Birds edge home in Atteridgeville

In the wake of much bravado preceding what was termed the ”Gauteng Challenge”, Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows edged home on penalty kicks against Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United respectively in what were no more than gloried friendlies at Atteridgeville’s Super Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Santos and Chiefs draw again

It hardly required a soothsayer to forecast the goalless draw in the Premier League game between ”goalless-draw champions” Santos and Kaizer Chiefs at a windswept Athlone Stadium on Sunday evening. ”We played against the wind in the first half,” complained Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral afterwards, ”and could not master it”.

Chiefs, Downs get ready to rumble

There is a stark difference of opinion as to how Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns view their status in South African soccer: Chiefs claim the Brazilians are attempting to usurp their role of pre-eminence while Sundowns, for their part, insist they have already achieved this objective.

Ertugral familiar with Sundowns’ strengths

Last season Ajax Cape Town beat Mamelodi Sundowns four times under the guidance of Muhsin Ertugral, who also led the young Cape team to an emphatic victory in the Absa Cup, beating none other than Sundowns in the final. This Saturday Ertugral’s Kaizer Chiefs take on Sundowns in the final of the Telkom Knockout Cup.

PSL reprieve for suspended Sundowns stars

The Premier Soccer League has acted with uncharacteristic speed in rearranging Friday night’s abandoned PSL game between Mamelodi Sundowns and Jomo Cosmos — in the process providing suspended Brazilian stars Vuyo Mere and Shere Lekgothoane with a reprieve for Saturday’s Telkom Knockout final.

Pirates, Chiefs finish on level score

The sultry Durban weather did not deter Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs from entertaining a capacity crowd with four fantastic goals in a pulsating Premier Soccer League match at the Absa Stadium on Saturday. Chiefs striker Mabhudi Khanyeza scored one of the quickest goals, in 17 seconds, to be seen in South Africa.

Rain halts Sundowns, Cosmos clash

Lightning resulted in Daniel Bennett halting the goalless Premier Soccer League game between Mamelodi Sundowns and Jomo Cosmos a minute after half-time at a sparsely filled Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Friday night — and after a rain inspection 20 minutes later, the referee called off the proceedings.

Downs, Chiefs in goalless draw

Telkom Knockout finalists Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns failed to imprint a psychological advantage for their cup clash next month in a goalless draw at King’s Park Stadium on Wednesday night. After Ajax Cape Town clobbered Moroka Swallows 4-1 in Cape Town, Chiefs now trail the log leaders by a massive 10 points.

Of critics with short memories

I will not hold it against you if you read this and think it is about football. But it is not. Last week the Premier Soccer League’s board of governors decided to pay some of their number a once-off R70-million gratuity, with luck ending months of speculation over payments to individuals instrumental in getting football’s sponsorship to top the R1-billion mark.

Tough test ahead for Igesund

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Gordon Igesund faces arguably the toughest test of all Premier Soccer League (PSL) coaches as he guides his team towards a third consecutive league title as well as a third cup final this year. ”The better the team becomes, the more challenges you face and have to accept,” Igesund said on Monday.

Chiefs pull together to beat Celtic

In what has generally been a bleak and frustrating season, Kaizer Chiefs discovered a ray of sunshine at a scorchingly hot Mmabatho Stadium on Saturday afternoon and qualified for the Telkom Knockout final with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic.

‘Lost’ Chiefs looking for direction

Some of the stands at the curious, if aesthetically shaped, Mmabatho Stadium are facing away from the pitch. It would, therefore, seem an appropriate venue for Kaizer Chiefs to tackle Bloemfontein Celtic in a critical Telkom Knockout semifinal on Saturday, with the direction in which the troubled Amakhosi are heading equally blurred.

‘Wounded birds’ blight Swallows

An injury report from Moroka Swallows’ medical staff 24 hours before the crunch Premier League game against Kaizer Chiefs at King’s Park on Wednesday night conjured up a picture of the wounded limping back in pain from the Crimean War. Five Swallows players who ostensibly would be first-choice selections for the Sowetan ”Derby-by-the-Sea” are unavailable.

Chiefs score three for rare victory

Kaizer Chiefs left behind their inconsistent ways by taking down Free State Stars 3-0 in wet conditions in their Absa Premiership match played at Olympia Park in Rustenburg on Wednesday night. Kinnah Phiri’s charges collapsed when it mattered most — in the second half — as Mabhuti Khanyeza, Onismor Bhasera and Shaun Bartlett scored goals.

Downs, Chiefs look to kick-start stuttering season

Call it an amazing coincidence or something worth a disbelieving mention in Ripley’s Believe it or Not. But with Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs kept apart and drawn to play Free State Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic in Telkom Knockout semifinals in 10 days, finding the match-ups reversed in league games on Wednesday is undoubtedly a mathematical phenomenon.

Chiefs win 3-1 in penalty shoot-out

Kaizer Chiefs tempted fate and won a blood-and-thunder, error-infested Telkom Knockout game against Moroka Swallows by a 3-1 penalty shoot-out margin after the teams had finished level 2-2 after extra-time at Loftus on Saturday night. In truth, the Amakhosi should have had their place in the quarterfinals signed and sealed in the opening period against an amateurish, out-of-touch Swallows.

Chiefs swagger but fail to beat SuperSport

SuperSport United held Kaizer Chiefs to a 0-0 draw in an entertaining Premier Soccer League game at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Sunday. The fancy of the fans

Orlando Pirates coach Bibey Mutombo says he is not the first Pirates coach to be put under pressure from the fans. Duh! Given that this is the club’s 70th anniversary and that it boasts millions of passionate and opinionated fans, it stands to reason there must have been one or two other coaches before Mutombo, whose governance of the team did not meet the supporters’ expectations.
