Ad hoc committee heeds civil society warnings about proposed intelligence legislation, writes Clive Rubin.
Possible irregularities in the passage of legislation to eliminate cross-boundary municipalities are being investigated by the Public Protector. On May 8 the Cape Town office of the Public Protector handed a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, asking her to explain how the 12th amendment to the Constitution was passed despite confusion over the recording of votes that took it past the required two-thirds majority.
Despite an economic slump, food queues and fuel shortages, mining activity is surging in Zimbabwe. The combination of a currency that is competitive in United States dollar terms, a skilled workforce and a climbing precious-metal price have made the outlook for Zimbabwean mining profitable.
The World Bank has stepped in to reinforce Africa’s mining renaissance, prompted by the rise in the gold price and peace settlements in a range of war-torn countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo. This emerged from the recent Mining Indaba 2004 in Cape Town, an investor conference oriented towards direct inward investment in Africa.

The share price of Old Mutual (OM) in London and Johannesburg dropped 2,5% over five days this week, following the announcement that its United States subsidiary, mutual fund managers Pilgrim Baxter, has been charged with improper trading conduct.
