Tiger Brands has been ordered to pay a R98,7-million penalty by the Competition Commission after admitting to participating in bread and milling cartels, the commission announced on Monday. Tiger Brands also agreed to assist the commission in prosecuting remaining cartel members who have not cooperated with the commission.

The Green Scorpions have shut down ArcelorMittal operations at its Vaal waste site over its dumping of hazardous waste and air and water pollution, it was announced on Tuesday. The move followed numerous ”futile attempts” at getting the steel company to clean up its act, Gauteng’s department of agriculture, conservation and environment said in a statement.
The Competition Commission has recommended the prohibition of a merger between Arcelor Mittal and Duferco Steel Processing. The merger would ”substantially prevent or lessen competition”, the commission said in a statement on Thursday.
The Food and Allied Workers’ Union (Fawu) has called on the government to probe the increasing prices of basic foodstuffs. ”We believe that the skyrocketing food prices are the result of anti-competitive conduct by the major role players in the food production and supply chain,” Fawu said in a statement on Wednesday.

Having for the first time in a decade halted the draining away of freight transportation from the railways to the roads, Maria Ramos, the chief executive of Transnet, is aiming to win back a large slice of the business. "Not all cargo on the roads is suitable for rail," Ramos explained in Cape Town on Wednesday, "but we are targeting the container traffic aggressively."
