A man and a woman travelling in a white BMW were critically injured outside Hillary Primary School in Durban on Tuesday morning after gunmen opened fire on their vehicle, which had stopped near the school. Donovan Pillay (26) was seated in the car with Leanne Armugam — the wife of his cousin, local taxi boss Duncan Armugam.

Dozens of police officers and members of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union converged at a Durban school on Thursday, 48 hours after a former pupil went into the school and threatened teachers and pupils with a gun. The matter was only reported to police on Wednesday afternoon.

Teachers and school staff are the responsibility of their employers, and parents are responsible for getting their children to school safely, the KwaZulu-Natal Parents’ Association (KZNPA) said on Tuesday. KZNPA chairperson Sayed Rajack said schools have become the easiest targets for criminals.

A Durban teacher was stabbed and robbed of her vehicle by five men on Monday, police said on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Superintendent Daniela Veldhuizen said the teacher was leaving Mariann Park Primary School in Mariannhill when the incident took place.

An elderly Durban couple is in a critical condition in hospital after being drugged and robbed on Wednesday by men claiming to be traditional healers. Police said the man and woman were with their son at the time. The family had entered a Standard Bank branch in Amanzimtoti and withdrawn a large sum of money.
