Frenchman shatters world swimming record

Three days, three records. Alain Bernard set a world record in the 50m freestyle on Sunday after twice lowering the 100m freestyle mark in the previous two days at the European swimming championships. The muscular Frenchman swam 21,5 seconds to beat the time of 21,56 set last month by Eamon Sullivan of Australia.

McClaren looks to fulfil Uefa Cup destiny

Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren is an habitually cautious man, but in the past few weeks even he has allowed himself to muse on whether his side’s progress to the Uefa Cup final might be their destiny. Twenty years after the club went into administration, Boro have come from three goals down to win both the quarterfinal and the semifinal.

AC Milan hold on to reach final

AC Milan went into their Champions League semifinal match against PSV Eindhoven looking strong and confident. The Italian team came out of it lucky to be still alive in Europe’s top club competition. The six-time champions lost 3-1 on Wednesday but still advanced on away goals after winning at home 2-0.

Alex scores in PSV Eindhoven victory

Brazilian Alex scored early on to earn dominating PSV Eindhoven a 1-0 Champions League home victory at the Philips Stadium over hapless Monaco, who did well to keep down the winning scoreline on Tuesday. PSV, inspired by midfielder Mark van Bommel, had countless chances in the first half but only managed Alex’s eighth-minute goal.
