Rory Sabbatini had to settle for beating the number-three player in the world and a two-time Masters champion. As usual, Tiger Woods wasn’t at the Colonial. Sabbatini made a 15-foot birdie putt on the first play-off hole at the Crowne Plaza Invitational to beat Jim Furyk and Bernhard Langer.
After the rain, everybody left at the Colonial was under par. The waterlogged second round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational was completed on Saturday afternoon, when 24 players finally managed to finish. They ran out of daylight the day before and then had the scheduled resumption delayed by more rain.
South Africa’s Tim Clark shot a six-under-par 64 to take a one-stroke lead in the second round of the rain-hit Colonial Invitational on Friday. Much of the field was unable to finish their second round due to the heavy rain that hampered play on the first two days of the event and a 36-hole cut has yet to be established.
Tim Herron sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to defeat Sweden’s Richard Johnson and give the American his fourth career PGA title on Sunday at the Colonial Tournament. Herron, who had not won a US event since the 1999 Bay Hill Invitational, nearly squandered a lead with three back-nine bogeys in the final round, the last at the 16th hole.
