Spy boss’s case postponed

The court case involving former spy boss Billy Masetlha and two co-accused was postponed in the Pretoria commercial crimes court on Friday. Masetlha’s co-accused, Muziwendoda Kunene, a software salesperson, and Funokwakhe Madladla, the former National Intelligence Agency manager for electronic surveillance, have already been charged with fraud.

Arrests, injuries in Moutse protest march

Police officers on Thursday shot rubber bullets at protesters burning African National Congress T-shirts bearing President Thabo Mbeki’s face during a march to the mayor’s office in Moutse district, a municipality of greater Groblersdal. More than 30 marchers were injured in the scuffle, and 46 protesters were arrested and charged for public violence.

Close, but no heatwave

South Africa is not experiencing a heatwave, the South African Weather Service said on Thursday. ”It is close to a heatwave, but it [the temperature] will be cooling down rapidly tomorrow [Friday],” said spokesperson Garth Sampson. He said a heatwave is measured in the smallest province of the country, which is Gauteng.

Disagreement over teacher shortage in Gauteng

Many Gauteng schools are experiencing a shortage of qualified teachers, the South African Teachers’ Union (SAOU) said on Wednesday. However, the education department has rejected the statement by the teacher body, saying there is no shortage. SAOU provincial spokesperson Carel Cronje said an increasing number of principals are experiencing problems in finding suitable teachers.

They also accused the government and big business of using bullying tactics in the matter. FNB’s R20-million campaign involved print, television and radio advertisements.

Cachalia denies pledging to quit

Gauteng provincial minister for community safety Firoz Cachalia has denied pledging to quit if crime levels did not decline in a provincial police operation, dubbed Iron Fist. Cachalia said on Friday he was asked by a journalist at a press conference at the launch of the operation if he would consider resigning should crime not decrease.

Gauteng Business Barometer falls in December

The Gauteng Business Barometer (GBB) slipped by 6,2% in December to 145 index points from 154 index points in November. The index is also 4,8% lower than in December 2005, when it stood at 152 index points. The GBB is a unique provincial index that measures business activity in various economic sectors in Gauteng.

Gautrain company raises R3bn loan

Controversial Mti to head 2010 Cup security

Former prisons chief Linda Mti has been appointed as head of 2010 Soccer World Cup security, the local organising committee confirmed on Tuesday. ”He took up his post in January,” spokesperson Tumi Makgabo said. Also on Tuesday, Gauteng police said that a case against Mti for alleged drunken driving had been struck off the court roll.

Former Miss SA finalist out on bail

A former Free State Miss South Africa finalist, Taryn Thompson, and her husband appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday on drug-related charges. Thompson was released on bail of R1 000 while her husband was remanded and will formally apply for bail on February 5, said police spokesperson Captain Magda Muller.

Metrobus: Strike had little impact

A Metrobus strike on Monday did not have a huge impact on commuters, the company said. ”About 80% of our buses did run this morning,” said spokesperson Charles Hlebele. He said about 80 employees gathered outside Metrobus offices on Monday morning after a dispute with the company over sick leave.

Gauteng provincial minister of safety Firoz Cachalia must provide figures of each major crime category when he releases feedback on his six-month initiative to bring crime under control in the province, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Sunday. Afrikaans musician robbed at gunpoint

Popular Afrikaans musician Anton Goosen was robbed of R584 000-worth of personal belongings by four armed men at his house in Hennopsrivier Valley near Hartbeespoort Dam, Gauteng police said on Thursday. The men made off with Goosen’s pistol, a DVD player, a TV set, a laptop computer, CDs and an undisclosed amount of money, spokesperson Captain Julia Klaasen said.

Gauteng waits on date for taxi scrapping

No dates have yet been set for the scrapping of taxis in Gauteng, Transport Department spokesperson Sam Monareng said on Thursday. Dates have also yet to be set for the destruction of old vehicles in the North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, he said. All Monareng could indicate was that dates would be announced ”soon”.
