‘Angel of Soweto’ collapses in court

Jackie Maarohanye, the embattled principal of the Ithuteng Trust school in Kliptown, was taken to hospital after collapsing following her appearance in the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto, media reports said on Monday. She was allegedly part of a group that held a reporter and driver from the Sowetan newspaper hostage at the weekend.

Shilowa says ‘better Gauteng is in the making’

Gauteng has more jobs and is becoming a better place to live, Premier Mbhazima Shilowa said on Monday. ”A better Gauteng is in the making,” he told the opening of the provincial legislature. By March last year there were about 3,3-million jobs, an increase of 426 000 jobs in four years, said Shilowa, promising to make even more of an effort in this regard.

Mama Jackie, 72 supporters arrested

The embattled principal of the Ithuteng Trust School in Kliptown, Jackie Maarohanye, and 72 other people, have been arrested after a journalist was assaulted and held hostage. Reporter Vusi Ndlovu and driver Mabu Nkadimeng from the Sowetan newspaper were held hostage on Saturday for seven hours.

Sowetan reporter held hostage at school

A reporter and driver from the Sowetan newspaper were on Saturday afternoon held hostage for six hours by a group of people at the school of the embattled Jackie Maarohanye — the principal of the Ithutheng Trust school in Kliptown. Maarohanye handed herself over to the police in October last year for cases including public violence and malicious damage to property.

KZN ‘on the move’ but crime, Aids persist

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is a province ”on the move” despite a high crime rate and high incidence of HIV/Aids, Premier S’bu Ndebele said in his State of the Province address in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday. Speaking at the Royal Show Grounds, Ndebele labelled 2007 as the year that KwaZulu-Natal is ”building the economy through partnerships”.

Mob beats alleged robber to death

A mob beat a man to death after he was caught allegedly stealing from a house in Etwatwa in Benoni on Monday. The three were caught ”red handed” by a homeowner, said Superintendent Eugene Opperman. A large group of residents began assaulting the three men with various weapons. They also threw boiling water over them.

No date yet for ANC hoax e-mail talks

The African National Congress (ANC) has yet to decide when its national executive committee (NEC) will meet to discuss a report into last year’s hoax e-mail saga. The NEC was discussing the matter on Monday, said ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama. It has not yet been decided whether it will take place this weekend — as has been reported. The date will be announced, he said.

Spy boss’s case postponed

The court case involving former spy boss Billy Masetlha and two co-accused was postponed in the Pretoria commercial crimes court on Friday. Masetlha’s co-accused, Muziwendoda Kunene, a software salesperson, and Funokwakhe Madladla, the former National Intelligence Agency manager for electronic surveillance, have already been charged with fraud.

Arrests, injuries in Moutse protest march

Police officers on Thursday shot rubber bullets at protesters burning African National Congress T-shirts bearing President Thabo Mbeki’s face during a march to the mayor’s office in Moutse district, a municipality of greater Groblersdal. More than 30 marchers were injured in the scuffle, and 46 protesters were arrested and charged for public violence.

Close, but no heatwave

South Africa is not experiencing a heatwave, the South African Weather Service said on Thursday. ”It is close to a heatwave, but it [the temperature] will be cooling down rapidly tomorrow [Friday],” said spokesperson Garth Sampson. He said a heatwave is measured in the smallest province of the country, which is Gauteng.

Disagreement over teacher shortage in Gauteng

Many Gauteng schools are experiencing a shortage of qualified teachers, the South African Teachers’ Union (SAOU) said on Wednesday. However, the education department has rejected the statement by the teacher body, saying there is no shortage. SAOU provincial spokesperson Carel Cronje said an increasing number of principals are experiencing problems in finding suitable teachers.

The Gauteng Business Barometer (GBB) slipped by 6,2% in December to 145 index points from 154 index points in November. The index is also 4,8% lower than in December 2005, when it stood at 152 index points. The GBB is a unique provincial index that measures business activity in various economic sectors in Gauteng.

A Metrobus strike on Monday did not have a huge impact on commuters, the company said. ”About 80% of our buses did run this morning,” said spokesperson Charles Hlebele. He said about 80 employees gathered outside Metrobus offices on Monday morning after a dispute with the company over sick leave.

Afrikaans musician robbed at gunpoint

Popular Afrikaans musician Anton Goosen was robbed of R584 000-worth of personal belongings by four armed men at his house in Hennopsrivier Valley near Hartbeespoort Dam, Gauteng police said on Thursday. The men made off with Goosen’s pistol, a DVD player, a TV set, a laptop computer, CDs and an undisclosed amount of money, spokesperson Captain Julia Klaasen said.

Gauteng waits on date for taxi scrapping

No dates have yet been set for the scrapping of taxis in Gauteng, Transport Department spokesperson Sam Monareng said on Thursday. Dates have also yet to be set for the destruction of old vehicles in the North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, he said. All Monareng could indicate was that dates would be announced ”soon”.
