The leader of the self-declared breakaway enclave of Somaliland ruled out reuniting with battle-scarred Somalia and said the interim government’s claim of victory over insurgents in Mogadishu was premature. President Dahir Rayale Kahin also expressed hopes of greater international recognition for Somaliland.
After 19 years without a working government, Somalia would walk any award for longevity on a knife-edge. Equally, Somaliland, its northern neighbour on the Horn of Africa, must be a contender for the patience prize. This country, which rose from the ruins of dictator Siad Barre’s genocidal attempt to destroy it remains unrecognised by the international community.

Voters in Somalia’s breakaway republic of Somaliland cast ballots on Thursday to elect lawmakers amid hopes the exercise will bring them international recognition as a sovereign state. About 800 000 of Somaliland’s estimated 3,5-million people are eligible to vote in the election.

Authorities in Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland said on Friday they have arrested a senior al-Qaeda operative allegedly in the region to organise attacks on local leaders and foreigners. The operative was arrested along with two other al-Qaeda members after an overnight shootout in the capital, Hargeisa.
Somaliland is growing despite the international community, not because of it. It gets no loans or other assistance from the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund.
