Defence lawyers and observers have received death threats during the appeal hearing of four men sentenced to death over a Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) journalist’s murder, human rights groups said on Wednesday. Serge Maheshe (31), a reporter with Radio Okapi, was murdered in June last year.
China on Thursday snubbed an apology from CNN over remarks by one of its commentators as a wave of verbal assaults on foreign media raised concerns over coverage at this summer’s Beijing Olympics. CNN’s explanation that a commentator was referring to China’s leaders — not the people — as a ”bunch of goons and thugs”.
The news business remained a dangerous profession in 2007 with 171 journalists killed while pursuing their work, nearing the record 177 deaths of 2006, the International Federation of Journalists said in a statement. Iraq accounted for nearly a third of the deaths, with 65 journalists and media staff killed, the Brussels-based organisation said.
A journalist and two actors were arrested in Zimbabwe during a satirical play making fun of the country’s political situation, press freedom group Reporters sans Frontières said on Tuesday. It said plainclothes police stormed a theatre in central Harare on Friday night during a performance of The Final Push.
