A 14-year-old boy appeared in the Kwamsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the rape of an 11-year-old girl at Mchakwini reserve near Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal police said. The girl was sent by her mother to a shop on January 26. On her way back home she was accosted by a boy who threatened to kill her with a knife.

The body of a 70-year-old man was found with his testicles and one arm missing, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday. Umfolozi police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said Johannes Mchunu’s body was found on the banks of the Umfolozi River on Monday, a day after he went missing.

A 24-year-old Gauteng woman was found buried in a shallow grave 54m from her boyfiend’s KwaZulu-Natal home on Tuesday afternoon, police said on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe the grave was found at the Qakwini Reserve in Mtubatuba in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

A Qalakabusha prison escapee died on Friday morning after a shoot-out with law enforcement officials, KwaZulu-Natal police said. Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the incident took place at 2am in Mtubatuba. Xolani Ngobese and nine other convicted criminals escaped from the prison in northern KwaZulu-Natal on August 4 this year.

Exam papers that were destroyed in a fire at a high school in northern KwaZulu-Natal were scripts that had not yet been marked, police said. A fire ravaged parts of Siyelulama High School in Mtubatuba’s Thandanani area on Thursday night, destroying exam scripts, exam results and school records.

In a bizarre case of overloading, two policemen in northern KwaZulu-Natal impounded a blue Fiat Uno on Thursday that was being used to transport two cows and two goats. Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said two off-duty policemen were informed by residents of the Phelindaba area near Emanguzi that they had seen a man loading a cow into the small vehicle.

Four people appeared in the Manguzi Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the murder of two women accused of bewitching a northern KwaZulu-Natal school. Jealousy may have been at the centre of the murder of two women accused of bewitching a northern KwaZulu-Natal school, a teachers’ union reported on Friday. National Teachers’ Union spokesperson Allen Thompson said investigations by the union had revealed that one of the women burnt to death last Monday had a granddaughter at Manhlenga High School.

Youths who allegedly burnt two 60-year old women to death over a witchcraft claim are believed to have received the assistance from the local community, police said on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Jabulani Mdletshe said police believed the double murder was pre-planned and that residents from the Manguzi area in northern KwaZulu-Natal had assisted.

The KwaZulu-Natal department of education has sent a ward manager to Manhlenga High School to investigate a report that its pupils were suspected of setting two women alight over a witchcraft claim. Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said a huge group of youths had dragged the women from their home to a sports field.
