World Cup shines spotlight on Aids

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has teamed up with UNAids, the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) and the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership at the Cricket World Cup 2007 to highlight the situation of children and young people living with and affected by HIV/Aids.

Windies beat Pakistan in Cup opener

Dwayne Smith claimed three for 36 to follow up an explosive 32 off 15 balls as the West Indies launched the 2007 Cricket World Cup with a 54-run victory over Pakistan on Tuesday. Pakistan, chasing the West Indies’ total of 241 for nine off 50 overs, slumped to 187 all out off 47.2 overs.

We’ve got work to do, says angry Lara

West Indies captain Brian Lara acknowledged his side had a major problem to overcome if they are to fulfil their goal of becoming the first host nation to win the World Cup. The 37-year-old Lara believes his side has to overcome the kind of catastrophic batting collapse that saw them dismissed for 85 in 25.5 overs in Friday’s nine-wicket defeat to India.

Dravid century helps India to victory

Indian captain Rahul Dravid stroked a 105 on Thursday to steer India to a five-wicket win over the West Indies with one ball to spare in the opening one-day international at Sabina Park. Dravid’s innings, which spanned 102 deliveries, trumped Chris Gayle’s earlier effort of 123 that led the West Indies’ 251 for six off 45 overs.

Pakistan celebrate Caribbean success

Fast-bowler Shabbir Ahmed rushed Pakistan to a comprehensive series-tying victory against the West Indies in less than an hour on the final day of the second cricket Test at Sabina Park on Tuesday. It was Pakistan’s first Test victory in the Caribbean since 1988, and earned them a 1-1 share of the two-match series.

Windies admit to batting ‘very poorly’

South Africa defied a 75-minute stoppage for rain to complete an eight-wicket win in the second one-day international against the West Indies on Sunday. Opening batsman Boeta Dippenaar top-scored for the South Africans with an undefeated 60 from 78 balls that contained four boundaries and earned the man-of-the-match award.

South Africa again bowled with discipline to restrict the West Indies to a modest 152 for seven from their allocation of 50 overs in the second one-day international of their best-of-five series on Sunday. Courtney Browne, under pressure to keep his place, hit the top score for West Indies of 46 not out from 59 balls.

Ntini nails West Indies to the rack

South Africa, led by the tireless Makhaya Ntini, bowled with purpose to dismiss West Indies for 253 in 48.5 overs in the first one-day International of their best-of-five series here on Saturday. Ntini, one of the two bowling thorns in the West Indies side during the Test series which South Africa won 2-0, was the most successful bowler with four wickets for 46 runs from his allotment of 10 overs.

SA defeat Jamaica by 29 runs

Shaun Pollock took 4-18 and Boeta Dippenaar and Mark Boucher hit half-centuries as South Africa beat a Jamaica XI by 29 runs in a warm up on Thursday for the one-day series against the West Indies. Dippenaar, who opened the batting, was the top scorer with 64 after South Africa won the toss and reached 245 off 50 overs.
