PSL commission payments in spotlight

It has been described by one newspaper as ”splitting the Premier Soccer League [PSL] down the middle.” But what Finance Minister Trevor Manuel described as ”morally reprehensible” commission payments amounting to hundreds of millions of rands to PSL officials has seemingly united 45-million South Africans in outraged opposition to the professional soccer organisation.

The fancy of the fans

Orlando Pirates coach Bibey Mutombo says he is not the first Pirates coach to be put under pressure from the fans. Duh! Given that this is the club’s 70th anniversary and that it boasts millions of passionate and opinionated fans, it stands to reason there must have been one or two other coaches before Mutombo, whose governance of the team did not meet the supporters’ expectations.

Tributes pour in for Gift Leremi

Mamelodi Sundowns player Mpho Gift Leremi, who died in a car accident on Monday night, would have been a star in 2010, the minister of sport said on Tuesday. ”There is no doubt that Gift formed part of a nucleus of the Bafana Bafana plans for the 2010 Fifa World Cup establishment,” Makhenkesi Stofile said in a statement.

Draw for Swallows not bad, but …

Moroka Swallows completed a 1-1 Premier Soccer League (PSL) draw against Santos at an almost deserted Athlone Stadium on Sunday. Also, Jomo Cosmos beat SuperSport United, Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars drew 1-1 and Ajax Cape Town came back from behind to beat Benoni Premier United 2-2.

Downs shade shoot-out against Cosmos

Relentless in defence, Jomo Cosmos capitulated 5-3 to Mamelodi Sundowns in a penalty shoot-out after the SAA Supa8 semifinal at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane ended goalless following extra-time. Cosmos played with a cynical acceptance that their best chance of winning rested in ensuring the proceedings remained scoreless.
