A tonne of ivory items and 57 suspects were netted in a four-month operation against wildlife crime, the Kenya Wildlife Service said Monday.
Three lions have been speared to death close to Kenya’s Amboseli national park, a senior Kenya Wildlife Service official said on Friday, raising concerns about the country’s dwindling population of big cats. Five suspects have been arrested over the killings, which occurred over a one month period, said Patrick Omondi.

A helicopter pilot described on Friday how he had been forced to drink his own urine and eat leaves to survive for eight days and nights after crashing in the depths of the Kenyan jungle. Solomon Nyanjui broke several ribs when his helicopter crashed on November 15 in the Mount Kenya region.

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) on Saturday said floods that have wreaked havoc across Africa killed 5 000 wildebeest, and not tens of thousands, blaming tourists for exaggerating the toll. Patrick Omondi, KWS head of species conservation and management, said the wildebeest drowning is a natural-selection phenomenon.
