Bloemfontein Celtic, earlier in the season regarded as contenders for the Absa Premiership title, are now contenders of another kind — for relegation. A 3-0 defeat against a sprightly Golden Arrows at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday afternoon has left Celtic precariously placed at 13th position in the log.
Just before kick-off on Sunday at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium, Bloemfontein Celtic supporters shouted at Santos substitute players to move off their team’s bench, and they obeyed. After the Premier Soccer League game — in which Celtic lost 1-0 to Santos despite a spirited showing — angry Celtic fans had to be closely watched by police.
Even after parting ways with coach Khabo Zondo after a string of poor results, Bloemfontein Celtic’s ambitions of improving their position on the log suffered a blow. Struggling Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Bloemfontein Celtic said on Monday that they had fired coach Khabo Zondo. Zondo, who also assists national coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, was axed a day after mid-table Celtic conceded three late goals to lose 3-1 at Moroka Swallows.
The Birds left it late — then swooped to a scintillating 3-1 Absa Premiership win over Bloemfontein Celtic with three goals in the last ten minutes of play. After Malawian defender Patrick Mabedi had equalised for Moroka Swallows, with a superbly timed header in the 79th minute, the team completed their scoring spree with late goals from substitutes Sandile Ndlovu and Alfred Phiri.

Bloemfontein Celtic beat the Limpopo-based Black Leopards 1-0 in a fast, entertaining Absa Premier League game played at Giyani Stadium on Wednesday night. Leopards’ coach, Boebie Solomons, could not believe his eyes when defender Luvhengo Mungomeni scored an own goal trying to clear four minutes before halftime.
