Federer in French Open cruise as rain holds up Nadal

Roger Federer cruised into the French Open second round on Monday while rival and triple champion Rafael Nadal was left kicking his heels in the locker room as torrential rain swamped Roland Garros. The world number one then had the unexpected bonus of seeing potential quarterfinal danger man Richard Gasquet pull out of the tournament.

Federer clears first hurdle at French Open

Roger Federer cleared the first hurdle in his campaign to finally land the only Grand Slam title missing from his collection at the French Open on Monday. World number one Federer, still missing a Roland Garros title among his 12 Grand Slam trophies, saw off world number 40 Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in his first-round match.

US, France and Argentina into Davis Cup last eight

Defending champions America and France, two of the most successful countries in Davis Cup history, will clash in this year’s quarterfinals after cruising through their World Group first-round ties. The United States, the 31-time champions, saw off Austria 3-0 while nine-time winners France also opened up a 3-0 lead over Romania.

Sharapova lets fly at US Open

Maria Sharapova opened the defence of her United States Open crown in commanding style on Tuesday by overpowering Italy’s Roberta Vinci 6-0, 6-1 in less than an hour. There were wins also for two former New York champions, Martina Hingis and Svetlana Kuznetsova, and for Andy Roddick, among others.
