New Zealand opening batsman Jesse Ryder abused hospital staff while receiving treatment for a cut hand suffered in a barroom incident early on Sunday morning, New Zealand Cricket said. Ryder, who will be sidelined by his injury for three months, will write letters of apology to hospital staff, a bar owner and New Zealand teammates.

It was Sunday night in Jozi in the type of pub in which the ”No Smoking” signs seem to turn a deeper shade of mustard gas with each devious gentle expulsion of spent tobacco. The half-price pizza special was long over. Worse, the kitchen was closed. So the hungry worked on their thirst instead.

New Zealand strike-bowler Shane Bond is to return home after sustaining an abdominal strain during the first Castle Lager Test against South Africa at the Wanderers on Saturday. New Zealand manager Lindsay Crocker said Bond’s injury will keep him out of cricket for four to six weeks.
New Zealand seam bowler Kyle Mills has been ruled out of next month’s two-Test tour of South Africa because of a calf strain, the country’s cricket board announced on Tuesday. New Zealand Cricket have called up Wellington pace bowler Iain O’Brien to replace the 28-year-old right-armer.
