Hospitals will not be protected from power cuts in the new load-shedding plan, contrary to an assurance given to the Johannesburg Hospital by City Power. Hospital chief executive Saggie Pillay said he was ”surprised” by the information that his hospital would not be excluded from the load-shedding.

The City of Johannesburg on Wednesday launched a timetable of possible four-hour power cuts to help industry and residents plan ahead. The timetable, effective from March 1, divides the city into eight geographic blocks and sets out the times when planned power cuts could occur, explained Vally Padayachee, director of engineering operations for City Power.

Stormy weather wrought havoc at OR Tambo International airport on Friday, delaying flights and inconveniencing passengers, the Airports Company of South Africa said on Saturday. The storm also knocked out electricity out in several areas of Johannesburg.

Load shedding could be extended to the weekend and Monday if electricity demand is not reduced and the supply situation not normalised, Eskom said on Friday afternoon. Eskom said initial investigations at the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric project indicated there was a supply problem on the Mozambican side because of poor weather conditions.
