Close but no cigar for Els

Ernie Els blew a two-stroke lead by hitting two balls into the water on the final hole of the Alfred Dunhill Championship, handing the win to John Bickerton. Els (73) took a triple-bogey on the par-five 18th, leaving Bickerton to win at 13-under 275 after a four-under 68 in the final round.

SA unknown leads at Leopard Creek

South Africa’s Omar Sandys, a player little known on the international golf stage, carded a four-under-par 68 on Friday to open up a two-shot lead in the €1-million Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek Country Club. Tournament favourite and world number five Ernie Els of South Africa was in joint third place.

South Africans Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel return to one of their favourite hunting grounds this week, both looking for a second victory in the Alfred Dunhill Championship beginning at Leopard Creek on Thursday. They are two of the bigger names in this €1-million event which forms part of the 2008 European Tour.

Rising rodent numbers pose serious disease threat

Rising rodent numbers in Africa are raising the chance of an outbreak of diseases such bubonic plague, a conference in South Africa heard on Thursday. The Rats and Human Health in Africa conference, attended by scientists and doctors from 20 countries, found rodent numbers in Africa are thriving as municipalities with growing populations struggle to manage sewage and refuse collection.

Ernie Els back on top

In only his second tournament following a five-month injury break, Ernie Els returned to the winner’s enclosure at the Dunhill Championship on Sunday. Els may have coughed and spluttered through the early rounds at the par-72 Leopard Creek golf course this week, but class and experience told in the final round.

Fluish Bothma moves into Dunhill lead

He may have felt a little under the weather before the start of the tournament, but by the time Michiel Bothma completed his second round at the Dunhill Championship, any sense of affliction had dissipated. As second-round play got under way late on Friday, there were still 24 golfers out on the course when play was suspended.

SA to ask Cites for hunting quota for black rhinos
