A wildfire fuelled by gusty winds destroyed dozens of homes from the mountains to the beaches of southern California’s ritzy Malibu on Saturday and was only partially under control, fire officials said. Thirty-five multimillion-dollar, ranch-style homes in the canyons of central Malibu were destroyed.

From the high desert to the Pacific Ocean, out-of-control wildfires have engulfed swathes of drought-parched southern California, claiming one life, destroying several homes and a church in Malibu, and forcing an entire community to evacuate. Thousands more homes remained at risk on Monday.

A wildfire fanned by Santa Ana winds destroyed four seaside mansions and damaged at least two others on Monday as it spread over more than 8ha in the Californian celebrity enclave of Malibu, authorities said. Flames boiled furiously out of the skeletons of multimillion-dollar beach homes for about two hours, fire officials said.
It is a perennial conundrum for any self-respecting Malibu millionaire: How to stop the public from unrolling their gaudy towels on the beach in front of your house and cluttering up the view of the ocean from the infinity pool. The answer this year, it seems, is as simple as it is drastic.
